Serum potassium and arrhythmias.
نویسنده
چکیده
Alterations in serum potassium levels are a common occurrence in clinical practice and entail a significant proarrhythmic risk. The present review is a short tutorial meant to assist clinicians in the pathophysiological interpretation of arrhythmias caused by dyskalaemia.

Result: Serum potassium concentrations were significantly decreased with the severity of arrhythmias (no arrhythmias; 4.2 ± 0.80 mmol/l, supra-ventricular; 3.8 ± 0.9 mmol/l, and ventricular arrhythmias; 3.3 ± 0.5 mmol/l, p=0.0001). The risks of supra-ventricular and ventricular arrhythmias were significantly increased by 2.4 and 8.3 fold, respectively in patients with serum potassium levels at ...
متن کاملRelationship of potassium and magnesium concentrations in serum to cardiac arrhythmias.
Low concentrations of potassium and magnesium in serum have been implicated in cardiac arrhythmias; the importance of mild hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia is uncertain. To investigate possible associations among use of diuretics, the concentration of these ions in serum, and the onset of clinically important arrhythmias, we reviewed records of 103 patients admitted to our Coronary Care Unit durin...
متن کاملPreoperative serum potassium levels and perioperative outcomes in cardiac surgery patients. Multicenter Study of Perioperative Ischemia Research Group.
CONTEXT Although potassium is critical for normal electrophysiology, the association between abnormal preoperative serum potassium level and perioperative adverse events such as arrhythmias has not been examined rigorously. OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of abnormal preoperative serum potassium levels and whether such abnormal levels are associated with adverse perioperative events. ...
متن کاملFrequency of cardiac arrhythmias in high and low- yielding dairy cows
Electrocardiography (ECG) may be used to recognize cardiac disorders. Levels of milk production may change the serum electrolytes which its imbalance has a role in cardiac arrhythmia. Fifty high yielding and fifty low yielding Holstein dairy cows were used in this study. Electrocardiography was recorded by base-apex lead and blood samples were collected from jugular vein for measurement of seru...
متن کاملEffect of potassium on conduction and ectopic rhythms in atrial fibrillation treated with digitalis.
POTASSIUM is used in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias due to digitalis as well as some arrhythmias not associated with digitalis therapy.' 10 A number of the latter no doubt represent cases of arrhythmias secondary to potassium depletion such as are encountered in diarrheal states, vomiting, and severe heart failure."' 12 There are instances of cardiac arrhythmia, however, in which potassiu...
